The best way to maximize daylighting in any building is to start with a core daylighting system analysis specific to the type of facility you operate and the lighting needs of the work performed there. This may include shading analyses, prismatic skylight sizing measurements, and assorted other tests to determine the perfect amount of daylight for a given application. Sometimes, however, these tests are not feasible for a variety of reasons.
The good news is that you can still benefit from an active daylighting system in your facility by following these three simple tips that apply to daylight harvesting systems for just about any type of building.
1. Keep Cardinal Directions in Mind. Although cardinal directions apply more to traditional windows rather than industrial skylights, it’s important to remember that southern facing windows receive the most sunlight throughout the day. Southern facing windows can be shaded in the summer to block the heat of the sun and left open in the winter to take advantage of solar heat gain.
2. Limit glazing. Our professional staff can explain the importance of glazing in more detail, but remember that too much glazing isn’t necessarily a good thing. While glazing helps to diffuse natural light and, in some cases, block the IR and UV light spectrums responsible for most solar heat gain, it’s usually best to limit glazing to about 30% of the wall area for best energy efficiency. Also keep in mind that effective natural daylighting systems require that windows be placed as high in the room as possible. As a general rule, a window can daylight a space for a distance equal to about 2 times the window’s head height.
3. Use Skylight Whenever Possible. Skylights are one of the best ways to achieve adequate daylighting in any space. Larger commercial curb skylights aren’t always better as small custom roof skylights placed throughout the ceiling area often provide more consistent illumination than a single large skylight in the same room.
